Urodynamic Evaluation (aka: Cystometrogram)
Catheters (small tubes) are placed in your bladder and rectum so that the physician can reproduce
your daily urinary symptoms. During the test, fluid will be infused in a controlled fashion to determine various characteristics
about your bladder's function, including:
1. Your perception
of water filling the bladder
2. Any urgency to urinate
3. Any uncontrollable bladder contractions
4. The volume at which your bladder cannot comfortably hold any more
5. The pressures that develop within your bladder during the fluid storage process
Stress testing: You may be asked to perform a number
of maneuvers such as coughing, changing positions, or bouncing on your heel with the catheter in place in an effort to reproduce
any symptoms of urine leakage or incontinence.
If you have been scheduled to undergo Urodynamic Evaluation, please follow the instructions below:
Urodynamic study preparation
A urodynamic study is used to gather information about bladder
function. This test is an assessment of function/dysfunction of the lower urinary tract. We will use the
information obtained to formulate an appropriate treatment plan, specific to the underlying condition or conditions.
Please discontinue the following medications 3 days prior to test
Enablex, Detrol, Detrol LA, Ditropan, Vesicare, Oxytrol, or Sanctura
Preparation for the procedure:
1. Perform a Fleets enema (or a like generic) at least 3 hours prior to your appointment.
2. Eat a light meal if desired.
3. Please be prepared to give a urine sample when arriving at your
appointment.
4. Do not wear lotion on your
skin.
Please plan on spending 60 minutes in the office.
This will allow adequate preparation and testing time.
You
will also be making a follow up appointment at this time to go over the results and treatment options with the doctor.
